starts with a dream; the dream of turning metal into something unique, transforming a flat sheet of stainless steel into a living object. The art of creating scultpure in a smaller sized version allows the artist to feel it, change it, look at it from 360 degrees and make any necessary changes that it requires to create that dream that is dancing within the sculptor’s head. In building large scale sculpture, this freedom is lost.
Speaking of inspiration for artists, nothing inspires a person like a brightly lit night with the moon spreading it’s light and enveloping the sculpture garden. This winter it seems as if there were numerous nights that the moon was particularly bright, or, were there just more nights that the clouds opened up for us to enjoy the delights of a brightly lit
“Capturing the Moon”, the latest contemporary sculpture created by Kevin, was inspired by just that feeling that is experienced when one is basking in those glorious moon rays. The patina on this garden sculpture, tho utilized previously in numerous other Kevin Robb sculptures, exemplifies the shadows that are cast throughout the sculpture garden. On a bright lit night the definitions of shapes are minimal but the spots of brightness, shadows of darkness, and everything in between dance throughout the gardens.'
work. The Mayor’s Public Art Initiative provided the means for the city to acquire a large, stainless steel sculpture created by Kevin. Sure enough, the Mayor forwarded an e-mail from a gentleman that was distraught over “that ugly thing you call art”. We e-mailed him back, introducing ourselves and invited him to the studio to meet Kevin and see what is involved in a monumental sculpture. He thanked us, but never came by.
The next day we received the most wonderful e-mail from this gentleman. “I must eat some crow” it began. “After the large sculpture was installed I went to see it and I have to admit that I am starting to like it. You have won over a grumpy old man in the neighborhood”. This was truly the best compliment we have ever received on one of Kevin’s public art sculptures!
